| Sight Seeing |
| The following
tourism sites are helpful in planning trips round
Northumberland and North East England: |
|
| Hadrian's Wall and
other Roman remains |
| The North East of
England has many wonderful sights to see. Perhaps the
most famous of them is Hadrian's Wall
and the other Roman remains associated with the
wall. From the Boatside Inn you are only 3 miles from
the Chesters
Roman Fort, the best visible remains of a cavalry
fort in Britain. While you are there, you could visit
the walled
herb garden at Chesters (not Roman). |
| A further 7 miles
away along the wall is Housesteads,
the best preserved Roman fort in Britain. The walks in
this area are particularly good. Close by is Vindolanda,
one of the most active archeological sites. |
| There are too
many places to mention here covering the 70 miles of
Hadrian's Wall from Wallsend to Bowness, but follow
the links below for further information on Hadrian's
Wall:

| Hexham |
Less
than 3 miles from the Boatside Inn is Hexham,
home of the beautiful Hexham
Abbey, dating from 674AD. It also boast a weekly market
(Tuesday at time of writing), and has many pubs, restaurants,
a museum,
library, cinema
and theatre.
A trip to the nearby town of Corbridge is also well worthwhile |
| Alnwick |
| Alnwick
was the capital town of Northumberland, and the castle
is still the home of the Percy family. A visit to Alnwick
Castle (the location for Harry Potter's Hogwart's
School) and The
Alnwick Garden could be a lovely day's outing. Have
a look round the town itself (recently voted "Britain's
best place to live") while you are there and call
in to Barter
Books. A must for any book lover. |
| The Castles
and Historic Houses of Northumberand |
| Northumberland
is fortunate enough to have many castles,
reflecting bygone days where its location on the border
between England and Scotland put it in a war zone. There
are a whole chain of castles up the North Northumberand
coast, including Warkworth, Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne
(Holy Island) and. There are also many inland castles
to see, and some really interesting stately houses such
as Cragside (Rothbury). If you visit Holy Island, the
Lindisfarne Priory is a magnificent ruin. Please check
the tides
if visiting Holy Island as it is accessed by a causeway. |
| Kielder
Forest and Reservoir |
Kielder
is the largest man made forest in Europe, and one of the
larger man made lakes. There are plenty of things to do
and see:
You could visit the Tower Knowe visitor centre, drive
along the shoreline and stop at some of the lookout points
or picnic sites, or be more active and go walking or cycling
on one of the many routes. You can horse ride, sail or
watch the wildlife. |
| Scotland and the Lake District |
| Warden really is a very good
base to visit the region from, and we haven't even mentioned
that you are less than an hour from Scotland
and 90 minutes from the Lake
District. |

| City Excursions |
| Newcastle
/ Gateshead is only just over 30 minutes by car from
the Boatside Inn. |
|
Newcastle / Gateshead is a mix of the modern and historic,
renowned for its excellent shopping and amazing nightlife.
|
| It also has some
outstanding architecture including the ancient city walls
and castle contrasted by the new Sage
music centre. Look at the beautifully proportioned
buildings in Georgian Grey Street. |
| It is "the
city of bridges", with the latest, the "Blinking
Eye" a delight to the eye. The quayside (river
Tyne) like most of the rest of the city, is a wonderful
blend of old and new with its waterfront bars and galleries.
There are many superb restaurants and cafés. And
it's a city of great culture, with many theatres,
museums
and art galleries as well as the iconic Angel of the
North. |
| Shoppers are more
than catered for with both the
Eldon Square shopping centre in the centre of Newcastle
and the Metro
Shopping centre just off the western bypass west of
Gateshead with its easy parking. |
| Another good site
to get ideas and information for a Newcastle / Gateshead
trip is
Visit NewcastleGateshead. |
| Carlisle |
| Carlisle
- the Border City - is the main shopping, commercial and
industrial centre in the northern half of Cumbria. |
