| Fishing |
| The
river Tyne is regarded by many as England's premier
Salmon fishing river. The Boatside Inn has 2 pass
permits for fishing, fly and coarse on a stretch
of the South Tyne alongside the property. This is
bookable with the accommodation. You will of course
need your own rod licence, obtainable from the Post
Office to fish. |
| Please
contact 01434 602233 if you are interested in either
combining a stay in the B & B or Self Catering
accommodation combined with fishing. |
| Note:
The season for salmon on the English rivers is 1
February to 31 October but a "catch and release"
byelaw obliges the return of any salmon caught before
16 June. There is no "catch and release"
for sea trout and the season is from 3 April to
31 October. |
| Other well
know rivers in the area include the Tweed (classed
as a Scottish river), which is under two hours away,
and the Coquet a little over an hour way. |
| There
are also excellent lakes and reservoirs to fish
in the area, including Kielder (recent site for
the National Fly Fishing Championship) being only
30 mins. away, and Derwent a very similar distance
in the other direction. |

| Golf |
| Northumberland
is an excellent place to play golf, with nearly
40 parklands or links courses. The Boatside
Inn can offer an excellent base for your golf tour,
but please note that our accommodation is better
suited for small groups or couples. |
|
The closest course to the Boatside Inn (1 mile)
is Hexham
golf course, designed by legendary golf course
architects James Braid and Harry Vardon in 1907.
This is a fabulous undulating parklands course,
with outstanding views, and would probably be rated
at a medium degree of difficulty. |
| Matfen
Hall has a very picturesque golf course, set
in the grounds of the Hall itself. Again a parklands
course, it is a little easier and flatter than Hexham.
It is about 10 miles from the Boatside Inn |
| For
the low handicap players, Slayley
Hall has 2 courses, the championship and challenging
"Hunting course", and the easier "Priestman
course". |
| For
those wishing to be challenged by links course,
you will need to travel to the Northumberland
coast. For example, Dunstanburgh
Castle Golf club, or the 9 hole Alnmouth
Village Golf club (one of the oldest in England)
offer excellent golf with wonderful coastal views. |

comprehensive list of many excellent Northumberland
golf courses, try this link.
You'll be hard pushed to find a bad course. |
